The Gauer School in Anaheim California. A portrait of happy, fit kids
The Student Scholars are just that; scholars in the classroom who also happen to be in a running club. Running on the grass and sidewalks of The Gauer School started with some help from a volunteer coach in the community. He wanted to help get kids more fit. The Gauer School is almost 85% Mexican-American students and is a Title 1 school. These kids come from low-income homes and any extra help in outside the classroom time was a big help. Many students have to help with chores that parents would do in households where a parent is not working long hours.
When the American Running Association heard from The Gauer School about participating in the RUN A MILE Program, little did the staff know how committed to running and fitness the school had become. So in ensuing years, The Gauer School became a model of how to approach running both during school and after the school day.
Today, the students are models in the classroom and also when they go for runs on the grassy fields adjacent to the school.
THE RUN A MILE PROJECT Is happy and proud to promote all the fitness success of the student scholars of The Gauer School. They are a shining example of what can be accomplished with community support and leadership that believes in fitness through running.
